Working with the acclaimed designer Katja Gretzinger, Daniel Young and Christian Giroux have produced an artist book that begins from the conceit that the internet is the final and ultimate venue for all art. Didactically titled A-BOOK-THAT-IS-A-WEBSITE-FOR-A-FILM-THAT-IS-A-SCULPTURE.CGDY.COM is an experimental artist publication that combines frame scans from a 35mm motion picture film with exhibition documentation, in process photography, concept images, design and engineering drawings from their sculpture that is also film: Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles.

Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles began as the desire to collide the projected image with the apparatus of its presentation, and the moving image with sculpture, found its form by synchronizing a virtual camera path with the path of a film loop, composed of a closed granny knot that has been expanded and twisted with the aid of mathematicians and engineers. Working with in virtual modeling environment the artwork was composed into a tangle of motion picture film becoming a sculpture of images from the perspective of its surface.

Accompanying the images are texts from John Barlow, Ina Blom, Eric Cazdyn, Geoffrey Farmer, Agnieszka Gratza, Mesh Consultants, Erin Moure, Bridget Moser, Judy Radul, Patricia Reed, Reza Negarestani, Mohammand Salemy and Micheal Snow.

Expanded project texts are provided as a PDF by Reza Negarestani and Mohammad Salemy.

Using the artwork (its methods, interests and impulses) as a starting point, thirteen writers–artists, theorists and poets–provided texts that act as under-titles encoding their own narratives, subjectivities and tonalities that developed into a collective narrative system. Text and ‘the word’ is added to the struggle between sculpture and moving image, perhaps producing a synesthetic effect of welding the experience of different media together in the audience.

A book presentation, and select reading of the texts will be held by Broken Dimanche Press, on Thursday September 12, at 7pm, Friedrichstraße 23a, 10969, Berlin.

Published by Broken Dimanche press on the occasion of the exhibition Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles at artist run center Inter/Access, Toronto, March 6–May 4, 2019.

Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles is currently on view at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (until October 6, 2019)
